Kybella FAQs

  • Kybella is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”

  • Kybella’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing a more sculpted chin profile.

  • No. Kybella is used to treat fat, not loose skin. Patients with loose skin are not candidates for this treatment. Please schedule a consultation with us to discuss alternate treatments to address loose skin.

  • Med 1 Aesthetics will create a tailored treatment plan based on your profile, but most individuals require 2-4 treatments depending on how much fatty tissue they have in the treatment area.

Each treatment consists of multiple small injections under your chin. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatments.

  • When injected into submental (under-chin) fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells are flushed out naturally through your body’s lymphatic system and can no longer store or accumulate fat.

After reaching your desired results, further treatment is not expected, making Kybella the best injectable investment for your money.

  • It is important to allow any swelling and numbness to dissipate prior to re-injecting. This is typically about 6-8 weeks following the initial injection but can vary per patient.

  • The most common side effect is extreme and immediate swelling at the injection site lasting a few days up to 1 week. You will have moderate swelling in the area treated. The treated tissues and surrounding area will feel warm, jello-like and appear red, numb and bruising is possible. Minor swelling can last up to 1-4 weeks.

We recommend scheduling Kybella treatments in the winter months so you can cover the area with scarves or sweaters. The worse it looks, the better your results!

  • Yes! Kybella can be used on small pockets of fat all over the body. Common areas of off-label treatments are anterior and posterior bra fat, as well as lower flanks.
